Mrz 23

I made it to the last 64 of Last Chance today and then lost to a Danish player. Two positions below show the decisive cube actions of the match. We then decided to go back to Germany in the early afternoon, because Steffi has to work already tomorrow morning.

Unfortunately we cannot watch the final of the Championsship flight, though “Kedde”, a very good friend of us, is one o the finalists and an upcoming TV star! In addition (to tell the truth) I’m also a bit fed up with backgammon, but later more to this.

The score (after 0 games) is: Jan 0, ace 1 (match to 5 points)

No tournament matches today due to the fact that I lost in the consolation last night, too. Nonetheless I decided to play the Viking Super Jackpot (500 €, 16 players, 9p matches). In the first round my opponent was Steen Groenbeck, and my girlfriend Steffi finally found some time to record a whole match played by me.

It turned out that participating at this jackpot was a bad idea. Somewhere in the match I had to play a 44 and totally missed that I could make my 5-point. The position was somewhat unusual and I was so fixiated on the idea of connecting six checkers at the other side of the board, that I simply overlooked covering my own 5-point and finally chose a third, even worse alternative (see second position below). Steen asked me directly afterwards why I played like I did, and I blushed. The fact that he mentioned my blunder might have cost me more equity afterwards in the match than the blunder itself. Anyhow, I lost 9-3 without having any chance. Gnubg rated Steen with 4.6, I played a 6.0.

The score (after 4 games) is: Steen 4, ace 1 (match to 9 points)

Unfortunately the saturday didn’t go that well. In round 3 I played a Swedish/Iranian guy. According to Morten Holm I was favourite to win the match (1.7-2.05 odds). I got a quick lead with 4-0, but in the fourth game he rolled a miracle 61 and instead of losing he collected two points. Actually I was lucky not to lose 4 points in that game, because he redoubled in a clear “too good” position. After a 5-5 I didn’t win a game, was trailing 5-15 and finally lost 8-17. I didn’t record the match, but collected 5 or 6 positions from it. Below you can see a few of them, including a 0.4 blunder!

Though there was a progressive consolation, all players who lost in round 1-3 were put into a 128 field. Here I lost already in round 1 with 2-11 against someone from Norway (Oystein: hello from your favourite Elias!). Again my opponent produced a 0.4 blunder. While publishing both positions I don’t want to blame my opponents but show how different match cubes can be (though the second one is problably even not a money double.).

Japy, Volker Sonnabend and me also registered for the Nations Cup. Here we played against Mama Lustra from Denmark. Good news is that I won my first match against Karsten Bredahl (13-5), bad news that we lost 2-1. During the match we discussed and disagreed on a certain cube decision. We later played this as a prop (see below). Though I lost 10 points in 20 games I’m still convinced this is a take (no matter whether money game or match). We also had a very intersting prime vs prime cube decision in this match.

The score is: Swedish_guy 0, ace 4 (match to 17 points)

Karsten, Mig and Jacob all voted for a pass. At the time we played the prop we only had a 2ply estimation by gnubg (around 0.8). Nonetheless I played the take side, and after 20 games against them and another 10 games against a friend I’m still convinced this is a take.

After losing in the first round of a second satellite (and playing very badly) I decided not to play any more games until the night. Below is my (probably worst) error in the 7p match. Somehow I thought that leading 5-1 means having 73% match equity instead of 80% and I doubled the position below. I was “rewarded with a 21 followed by a redouble on 8 and finally lost the match.

The championship flight at night went much better! BTW, this year an amazing number of 154 players take part. In addition to 78 players each in the advanced and intermediate flight plus 79 players in the beginners flight at thursday this means 391 players all in all. For results see dbgf.dk, some other reports and pictures are at gamonlife.com.

In the first round I got a bye. In round of 128 I had to play Kenji from Japan. Kind of a deja vu, because I also played him two years ago (and also in the first round). He was quickly leading 6-0. I somehow managed to come back and take the lead up to 14-7 and 16-8!. Kenji survived the Crawford game but lost the following game and the match. Below a few positions. Anyhow, I was more relieved by the fact that I was right in nearly all positions I thought to be critical than by surviving round2.

The weather here in the north of Sealand is – as usual – lousy ;-). It’s freezing cold and here and there there you still see some rests of snow. We arrived at around 4pm, unfortunately too late for playing the Japan Open or the Monte Carlo Qualifyer. Though I called a friend at 2 pm, they both were filled already.

So I decided to play a satellite for the championship flight. 16 players, entry fee 55 Euro, 7 point matches, the winner takes all. In the first round I had to play Martin Foldager, and this was already a big fun. We both had no dice, no cube, no scoresheet. Martin finally was able to get some dice, and we used a little sheet of the paper table cloth as “cube”, writing a “2” one side and a “4” on the other side.

Our neighbour, former world champion Peter Hallberg was joking “two world class players and they don’t have the equipment…”, but we were able to top even this. The match was decided within one game with a (non-existing) 8-cube! Below you can see all three cube decisions:

The score is: Martin Foldager 0, ace 0 (match to 7 points)

In the second round I played Hans Liby from Norway, gave him no chance and won 7-1. The semifinal was against Pia Jeppesen. After a 3-2 lead I was close to winning a doubled gammon, but had to leave a decisive double shot against an acepoint game and passed the recube. I then lost 7-3. Well, tomorrow is another day.

The score (after 0 games) is: Hans Liby 1, ace 3 (match to 7 points)

We then went to Kedde’s big appartment and had a improvised birthday party for my girlfriend Steffi. Kedde had prepared a cake, and with some wine and whiskey we all had fun until 2 in the morning.

As last year, the internet connection in the hotel Marienlyst is only partly working. Actually a shame for a hotel like this. While writing this text I don’t know when I finally can upload it to my webserver.
